Properties:
The Rönkhausen pumped-storage plant, built on the Dahlberg between 1964 and 1969, features an upper reservoir with a capacity of 1 million cubic meters. Another reservoir, with a capacity of 1.3 million cubic meters, is located 270 meters below in the Glingetal valley. In the underground power plant, water is pumped into the upper reservoir using pumps and turbines when electricity prices are low, so that it can be used to generate electricity during periods of high demand.
A comprehensive renovation of the upper reservoir took place in 2018–2019, which cost approximately 25 million euros and extended the operating permit through 2045. As part of this project, the 1.3-kilometer-long loop trail around the upper reservoir was renovated and expanded into an energy trail featuring specific scenic viewpoints, benches, and precise kilometer markers. This trail also offers a sweeping 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape.
The loop trail is fully accessible to the public and barrier-free.
