The Lippe floodplain, an important nature reserve, is located in the north of the district of Soest. The commitment of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Lippe Association and the NRW Foundation has led to the renaturation of extensive sections of the river since the mid-1990s. The Lippe floodplain is characterized by its diverse biotope structure, which ranges from the slow-flowing Lippe to extensive meadows and pastures, dry sandy heaths, dense tall shrub meadows, small woodland plots and a large number of ponds, pools and streams. Smooth oat and wet meadow areas in particular serve as refuges for rare plant species, including meadow silau, yellow meadow rue, meadow atlant and small rattle. Specialized types of vegetation such as English broom, dwarf feltwort and heather, which have adapted to the nutrient-poor soil conditions, thrive on the higher, sandy river terraces. The region is also an important resting and wintering area for various bird species. Observations include waders such as snipe, wood sandpiper and greenshank, duck species such as wigeon and teal as well as the crane.
