The Lippe floodplain, an area of particular ecological importance, is located in the northern part of the district of Soest. This has been extensively renaturalized since the 1990s thanks to the commitment of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Lippe Association and the NRW Foundation. The Lippe floodplain at Lippborg presents itself as a diverse natural landscape that is ideal for a regional cycle tour. This circular route opens up a mosaic of very different habitats: the calmly flowing Lippe, extensive meadows and pastures, dry sandy heaths, lush tall herbaceous meadows and idyllic forests, ponds, pools and streams. The biodiversity of the flora is impressive, especially in the smooth oat and wet meadows, which are home to rare plant species such as meadow silau, yellow meadow rue, meadow atlant and small rattle. Specialized plants such as English broom, dwarf feltwort and heather, which have adapted to the nutrient-poor soil conditions, thrive on the higher, sandy river terraces. The avifauna is also of outstanding importance: waders such as snipe, wood sandpiper and greenshank, various duck species such as wigeon and teal as well as cranes use the floodplain as an important wintering and resting area on their migration routes. The nature trail around Lippborg thus offers a variety of perspectives on a dynamic ecosystem, the observation of which is an enriching experience.
