The Möhne Valley circular route opens up the Sauerland for touring cyclists with a focus on an even topography. Along the Haarstrang, the route follows the course of the Möhne river, connecting the historic Hanseatic town of Brilon, the source of the Möhne, with its estuary into the Ruhr near Arnsberg-Neheim. A particular attraction is the use of large sections of the former Möhne valley railway line, which appeals to lovers of historic transport routes. This specific tour is designed as a circular route that starts and ends at Wilkeplatz in Warstein-Belecke and reveals cultural and scenic facets of the region. The experience is rounded off by a variety of restaurants along the way.

Information

Directions

After the start in Belecke, we follow the signs for the Möhne Valley Cycle Path to first pass through a beautiful, dreamy floodplain landscape with bird paradises. The riverbed was renaturalized as part of the MöhneLife project (www.moehne-life.de). Numerous fish ladders invite you to observe birds and nature, for example at the so-called Mülheimer Schlacht. In Sichtigvor, you can visit the old railroad carriage with a large miniature railroad world and many accessories from earlier times. In Allagen, the Dassel House with its museum of local history bears witness to earlier times of marble processing. In Niederbergheim, the old sawmill is a reminder of past working worlds. In Möhnesee-Wamel, the route heads towards Haarstrang. At the signpost for Körbecke (left), turn right onto the field path (there are no cycle path signs). In Westendorf, the "Kalkofen" area is on the left. The views across the fields and deep into the Sauerland forests are impressive. Hardly anyone knows that you are standing here on an important European natural border, as this is where the northern German lowlands give way to the low mountain range. To the right is the panorama of the Arnsberg Forest. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Lörmecke Tower. At the "Drewer Steinbruch" viewing container, there is a deep view into the former quarry, which is now filled with water and is not accessible to people. Nature has been allowed to develop completely independently here for many years. Then it's downhill to the starting point in Belecke. There are various places to stop for refreshments here (ice cream parlor, café, restaurants). There are benches for self-catering and a sandpit for children on the Wilkeplatz in summer.
