Plettenberg, located in the heart of the Märkisches Sauerland between the Ebbegebirge and Homert mountains, presents itself as a region of distinctive scenic diversity. Characteristic are the wooded mountain ranges and the river valleys of the Lenne, Else, Oester and Grüne. Particularly noteworthy is the Elsetal cycle path, which offers cyclists an appealing opportunity to experience this scenery, where nature and local industrial culture are in a balanced relationship with one another. The route through the Else Valley leads through a landscape characterized by dense forests and the calm course of the Else. Here, the authenticity of the region's nature manifests itself in a striking way. Plettenberg, as one of the most densely wooded municipalities in the Märkischer Kreis district, allows you to experience the local flora and fauna intensively on this trail. In addition to the cycling experience, Plettenberg offers a wide range of opportunities for cultural exploration and gastronomic delights. These elements enrich the stay and contribute to a comprehensive visitor experience. The town is a place where nature-related activities and local life develop a harmonious symbiosis.

Oestertalsperre
At the end of the 19th century, most forges in Plettenberg used water as a driving force. The production facilities had considerable problems in the summer, when the rivers did not carry enough water due to severe drought, and in the fall and winter, when the rivers became torrential due to heavy rainfall. To solve this problem, the Plettenberg industry built the dam in 1903. The facility includes the quarry stone dam with a dam height of 32 m and two sliding towers. Swimming and water sports are permitted in parts of the reservoir. This makes the dam a popular excursion destination. www.plettenberg.de
