Between Unna-Königsborn and Salzkotten, the Westphalian Salt Route explores the saline heritage along the historic Hellweg. Cyclists, hikers and travelers can discover a region whose history is shaped by salt production on this themed route. Current tourist attractions, including the Westphalian Salt Worlds Adventure Museum in Bad Sassendorf, enrich the cultural exploration. The route leads through the varied landscape of Westphalia, where the spas of Bad Sassendorf, Bad Waldliesborn and Bad Westernkotten offer brine health treatments in their facilities. The course of the Westphalian Salt Route is characterized by moderate topographical conditions. The use of asphalted farm tracks away from the main roads and separate cycle paths guarantees a pleasant ride. Numerous catering establishments along the route invite you to take a break. The Hellweg-Börde presents itself with wide fields, rows of trees and rural villages. The historic Hellweg was an important trade route between Duisburg and Paderborn, famous for the transportation of salt from Soest, Werl and Unna as well as iron goods from the Sauerland, which were distributed throughout the Hanseatic region.
