The historic town center "Alter Flecken" in Freudenberg is a remarkable example of 17th century half-timbered architecture. The town, first mentioned in 1389 with Freudenberg Castle, developed along the important trade route from Cologne to Marburg. Despite a devastating town fire in 1540, the town was rebuilt, with Count Wilhelm the Rich of Nassau ordering it to be rebuilt on a new site. This led to the creation of the characteristic street layout with Marktstraße, Mittelstraße, Unterstraße and Poststraße.

Another fire in 1666 destroyed almost all the buildings, but the reconstruction was carried out according to a uniform plan that integrated the original street pattern and preserved foundation walls. The castle was not rebuilt, instead the ruins were used as building material. In the late Middle Ages, Freudenberg was known for its iron smelting and later developed a leather industry. The historic town center survived the Second World War unscathed and is now considered an architectural monument of international importance. The 86 half-timbered buildings are listed as historical monuments and bear witness to the rich history of the region.
