The Diemel Cycle Path follows the course of the river from its source in Willingen-Usseln to where it flows into the Weser near Bad Karlshafen. The route is characterized by a consistently good infrastructure and clear signposting. There are various opportunities for leisure activities, recreation and cultural exploration along the route. The diverse landscape stretches from the hills of the Waldecker Upland to the Diemelsee Nature Park and the Sauerland to the low mountain range of the Weser region. It is characterized by valleys, gently rising mountain ranges, extensive limestone grasslands and the Rheinhardswald forest. The initial section of the themed cycle route leads through terrain with plenty of elevation before the route remains predominantly flat. There is a striking ascent in Padberg, the ascent of which is combined with an attractive view. The region along the Diemel Cycle Path offers numerous options for planning your stay. Cultural sights and natural attractions in the surrounding area allow for intensive exploration and extensive use of the opportunities to linger.

Junction sequence: 05 - 04 - 03 - 02 - 01 - 15 - 16 - Warburg - Dalheim - Liebenau - Trendelburg - Helmrshausen - 24You start at the source of the Diemel near Willingen-Usseln. The first section of the cycle route takes you through the charming low mountain range landscape of the Upland. The Diemelsee lake offers you numerous opportunities for an interesting stop. Marsberg's historic upper town, the idyllic Orpe valley with its numerous mills and hammers near Diemelstadt-Wrexen and the Hanseatic town of Warburg are the next highlights on the tour.You have already completed three quarters of the Diemel Cycle Path when you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the shell limestone sea in Liebenau. In Trendelburg, the climb up to Trendelburg Castle is well worth the effort - the reward: a wonderful view over the Diemel valley! Incidentally, there is some evidence that this is the place where Rapunzel let her hair down.Before you reach the baroque town of Bad Karlshafen, you travel through the historic Carlsbahn tunnel (202 m) and have the opportunity to visit the moated castle of Wülmersen. The unique architecture of Bad Karlshafen provides a glamorous end to your cycle tour along the Diemel Cycle Path. In Bad Karlshafen, you can continue your cycle tour on the Fulda Cycle Path / R1 to the Eder Cycle Path.

Safety guidelines

A rescue point system has been installed throughout the region (Soest district, Hochsauerland district, Märkischer district, Olpe district and Siegen-Wittgenstein district). Rescue points can be found on the information boards at the junctions of the South Westphalia cycle network.

Author Tip

In Trendelburg, the climb up to Trendelburg Castle is worth the effort - the reward: a wonderful view over the Diemel Valley!

There is no continuous railroad line along the Diemel, but there are train connections in Willingen, Willingen-Usseln, Marsberg, Marsberg-Westheim, Warburg-Scherfede, Warburg and Bad Karlshafen. It is generally possible to transport bicycles on trains, please ask Deutsche Bahn in advance.
