The Kierspe Museum Route offers an impressive regional cycle tour that combines cycling with in-depth insights into local industrial history. Designed as a circular route, the route starts at the Altes Amtshaus, which serves as the location for the Bakelite Museum. Here, visitors can trace the fascinating development of the Bakelite industry. The museum's extensive collection presents a variety of characteristic Bakelite utensils, including historical communication technologies, which underline the importance of this material for everyday life in past eras. The Altes Amtshaus itself, a building of historical relevance that once served as the seat of the local authority and later the town council, impresses with its striking architecture; the mighty flight of steps in particular gives the building an unmistakable appearance. This tour through Kierspe in the Märkischer Kreis district offers a special opportunity to explore the technical heritage and natural experiences of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Author Tip
The Schleiper Hammer is located directly on the route. The Schleiper Hammer is a former factory and is now used as a museum. The museum showcases the tradition of wide goods forging in the upper Volmetal in the 1930s. On special occasions, the machines in the Schleiper Hammer are switched on. You can still see how Bakelite is processed today. Bakelite is the first industrially produced plastic. The technical industrial monument shows the former hammer plant with turbine drive, transmission and spring hammer. The outdoor facilities with the two operating ponds and the shape of the building have been preserved in their original form to this day. The development of the Bakelite industry is documented in the upper part of the hammer mill. The outside of the plant can be visited at any time. The Schleiper Hammer is open for interior tours from April to October on the first Wednesday of every month from 10 am to 3 pm. Guided tours for groups are possible by prior arrangement with the local history association: heimatverein@kierspe.de
