The landscape around Bad Sassendorf is predominantly flat and yet multi-faceted, making it a suitable backdrop for cycling tours. The route leads through the fertile Bördeland landscape, past farmsteads and traditional villages, across meadows and along rivers. In addition to natural features, you will also discover historic lanes with half-timbered houses in the characteristic Westphalian style.
The "North Loop" stretches through the Bad Sassendorf districts of Bettinghausen and Ostinghausen, surrounded by the "Woeste" moor and nature reserve. This 50-hectare fen at the confluence of the Ahse and Woestebach rivers represents one of the last calcareous fens in the region. The diverse structure of shallow water, flood zones, ponds, reedbeds and wet grassland has developed into an important biotope for flora and fauna, attracting avifaunists in particular. A dedicated observation point provides insights into the birdlife and the behavior of the native water buffalo.
The return route runs in a wide arc along the Ahse and on the edge of Soest. An option to shorten the route is to pass through the district of Weslarn. After the cycle tour, there are various places to stop for refreshments, such as cafés and restaurants. In addition, the SoleTherme thermal baths and the spa gardens offer opportunities for recreation. Alternatively, you can visit the Westfälische Salzwelten adventure museum to learn about the history and significance of salt.
