Plettenberg, nestled in the Märkisches Sauerland between the striking elevations of the Ebbegebirge and Homert mountains, is characterized by a typical low mountain range landscape. The topography of the region is formed by wooded hills and the characteristic river valleys of the Lenne, Else, Oester and Grüne. A special feature is the upper reaches of the Oester, where the Oester dam is integrated into the natural landscape as a defining element. This backdrop forms the framework for the regional cycle tour "Plettenberg: Oestertalroute". The Oestertalroute provides a comprehensive experience of the local geography and leads through the eponymous Oestertal valley, whose natural features are determined by its proximity to the dam. The town of Plettenberg, known as the most densely wooded municipality in the Märkischer Kreis district, offers an environment in which the experience of nature and economic activity manifest themselves in a balanced way alongside its industrial character. The diversity of the landscape with its forests and bodies of water forms the basis for active leisure activities, complemented by various sports and cultural offerings.

Information

Directions

The route leads east from the station via Brauckstraße and then turns right into Bachstraße after approx. 200 m, crosses under the railroad line and then goes straight on to Kilian-Kirchhoff-Damm (Lenneroute). From here, turn left as far as the road, then right over the Lenne bridge and immediately right after the Lenne bridge onto the cycle path alongside the river. After crossing under the road bridge, the route bends left into the Else valley. The path initially runs west of the western bypass, crossing the Böddinghauser Weg, past flood inundation areas (retention areas) and passes under the western bypass before disappearing into a 734 m long tunnel. At the foot of the Kohlbuschberg slope, the route crosses Weidenstraße, then a short distance to the left via Moltkestraße, then to the right, where it follows the west tangent on the east side at the tunnel exit to the junction with Am Wall street. After crossing the street Am Wall, turn left and then right into the street Umlauf, then onto Maiplatz and you have reached your short destination, the center of Plettenberg's town center. There are numerous places to stop for refreshments in the pedestrian zone. To reach your final destination, continue through the Grünestraße bus station, then turn right towards the "Alte Feuerwache" youth center, past the war memorial for the fallen of the 1870/71 war and cross the Oesterbach towards Königstraße. Follow the road until you reach Lehmkuhler Straße, then take the pedestrian and cycle path alongside Königstraße and Oestertalstraße and turn left at the junction with Am Beiese. Then turn right towards and over the road Am Oesterhammer. A cycle and footpath branches off to the right from this road. It is located on the route formerly used by the Plettenberger Kleinbahn. The path runs parallel to the Oesterbach stream as far as the Oesterhalle in the Dankelmert district. Continue right, crossing Oester and Oestertalstraße, then turn left and right before the sports field, and then rejoin the former railroad line, which runs parallel to the Oesterbach, first to the left and then to the right, until you reach the road An den Kämpen. Turn left here until you reach Ebbetalstraße. Follow Ebbetalstraße uphill to the entrance to Himmelmert and turn left into An der Mühle. This is where the approx. 1 km long ascent to the destination Oestertalsperre begins, with a gradient of 10% in the lower section and 5% and 3.5% gradients further on.

Schwarzenberg castle ruins
It is an impressive building of feudal lords: the Schwarzenberg castle ruins. Probably chosen as a fortification site in the 12th century, in 1301 it became a symbol of Brandenburg power vis-à-vis Electorate Cologne with the erection of a "strong
tower", according to the chronicler von Northoff. Even today, the ruins are still impressive and delight not only Romanesque fans. The formerly square keep with a side length of almost 13 meters is considered one of the largest in Westphalia. The history of the castle was eventful and accompanied by family feuds. When a fire caused by lightning
in 1864 largely destroyed the castle, it was not rebuilt. Adventure tours with the ancient forest spirit "Drogo" also allow children to take part in the exciting history.
