The Roman-Lippe Route begins at the Hermann monument in Detmold and follows the course of the River Lippe from its source to where it flows into the Rhine. The route leads to important Roman sites, through extensive floodplain landscapes and past historic town centers. The Lippe, a defining waterway in North Rhine-Westphalia, has a multi-layered history. Its importance for the development of the neighboring regions has always been immense, as the Roman presence makes clear. Its course runs through five regions in a federal state with remarkable topographical diversity: the Teutoburg Forest, the Sauerland, the Münsterland, the Ruhr metropolis and the Lower Rhine. The Römer-Lippe-Route presents itself as a river-accompanying long-distance cycle route with a high level of quality. The tour makes it possible to experience multifaceted Roman culture, the experience of nature by the water and European history in depth. The reasons for the Roman use of the Lippe become clear as you explore the route.
