The preserved railroad embankment documents the historical connection between the station and the coal shed. This branch of the main Hamm-Paderborn railway line was once used to transport coal wagons.

In 1612, technical innovations were implemented in Sassendorf, including the construction of the Gradierwerk. The increased production output led to increased wood consumption as fuel for the salt works. This led to a switch to coal firing in 1705. However, the transportation of this material proved to be costly. A significant improvement was the railroad line built in 1850, which established a west-east connection between the Cologne-Minden and Thuringian railroads. This connection of the 'Hellweg' trade route to the German railroad network enabled the essential modernization of the salt works.
