The Rothaar road bike tour, a challenging circular tour, begins with moderate climbs that lead to Hallenberg. Further on, the passage behind Neuastenberg towards Hoheleye requires you to conquer the Großer Saukopf. A subsequent slight descent allows for a dynamic ride to Schmallenberg, before the ascent to Niedersorpe and the ride along the Sorpe follow. The route crosses the Große Bildchen before Siedlinghausen and then climbs moderately to Winterberg. The final climb to Küstelberg introduces the descent back to Medebach, with numerous opportunities to stop for refreshments along the way.

Wearing a bicycle helmet should be a matter of course for all cyclists. Before setting off, check that your bike is in perfect condition. For demanding tours, we recommend packing plenty of drinks and snacks.

Safety guidelines

A rescue point system has been installed throughout the region (Soest district, Hochsauerlandkreis, Märkischer Kreis, Olpe district and Siegen-Wittgenstein district). Rescue points can be found on the information boards at the junctions of the Südwestfalen cycle network.

Public transit

You can reach the Hanseatic town by train via Korbach, Olsberg or Winterberg stations and then travel comfortably to Medebach by bus.

How to get there

Coming from Frankfurt: In Frankfurt, take the A5. At the Gambach interchange, turn onto the A45 towards Gießen / Marburg and follow the highway to Marburg. Continue on the Marburg city highway to the Korbach / Frankenberg exit and stay on the B 252 to Frankenberg (Münchhausen, Ernsthausen, Bottendorf). In Frankenberg, continue in the direction of Schreufa / Sachsenberg / Münden. From Münden, please follow the signs to Medebach.


Coming from Paderborn: You are leaving Paderborn. Leave the B1 and take the A33 in the direction of Brilon, Kassel, Dortmund. Stay on the A33 and follow the road towards Korbach. From Korbach follow the signs to Medebach.


Coming from Dortmund, Arnsberg: From Dortmund (A1), drive to the Dortmund/Unna interchange, change to the A44 and drive towards Kassel until you reach the Werl interchange. Here, take the Arnsberg exit (A445). Stay on the A445 in the direction of Meschede (the highway merges into the A46) until the end of the highway (Bestwig). Drive in the direction of Winterberg (B7). 2km before Biggen continue in the direction of Winterberg (B480), you will pass through Assinghausen, Wiemeringhausen and Niedersfeld. Approx. 9 km after Niedersfeld, turn left towards Medebach and drive through the village of Küstelberg.
