The ascent starts in Schmallenberg-Oberkirchen, at the junction to the branch line to Winterberg. Along this passage there are various places to stop for refreshments before the actual ascent. The route initially runs upstream along the upper Lenne. After the village of Inderlenne, the chosen road is maintained. Experience has shown that an alternative route via Nordenau to Winterberg has a higher volume of traffic and a more intensive cycling style. The route then leads upstream to Westfeld, an established center for cross-country skiing in the winter months. At this point, the route leaves the course of the River Lenne and the actual ascent begins. The road continues steadily uphill through Ohlenbach until you reach the "Sahnehang" ski slope just before the Kahler Asten. Turn right here and then follow the signs to the Kahler Asten. The summit is the highest point accessible by road bike in North Rhine-Westphalia.

There are no train stations along the route. It is only possible to travel to a limited extent by bus. The nearest train stations to the starting point are in Winterberg and Meschede.
