Old wine cellar / former coal shed

The former coal shed in Bad Sassendorf was built in 1850–55 along with the branch line and the railroad route from Soest via Sassendorf and Lippstadt to Paderborn. Serving as a transshipment point between the railroad and the saltworks, the building supplied the operation with coal. The cars traveled up a twelve-meter-high railroad embankment to reach the shed, from where the saltworks laborers transported the fuel in mine cars to the boiling pans. When salt production ceased in 1934, the branch line and the coal shed lost their function. In 1937, the Brinks family acquired the property; since 1984, the historic building has been used as a wine bar.
